Three Ways to Maintain Your SR-22 Endorsement

by Jeanne Fuller

If you are required to carry an SR-22 endorsement on your auto-coverage policy, you understand just how important this endorsement is. You likely also understand just how vital it is that you maintain this endorsement, as any problems could not only lead to a revocation of your driver's license but also put your freedom in jeopardy. Here are just some of the important things you want to remember to protect yourself.

Pay Your Premiums

It is vital that you not let your auto-insurance policy lapse. When there is a lapse in coverage, your SR-22 endorsement will immediately be terminated. Once this occurs, the insurance company is required to notify the state of your change in your coverage status, and if you don't immediately get another insurance plan, this can lead to hefty penalties on your end.

You can avoid this type of scenario by always paying your premium on time. If you are concerned that you might forget, you might be able to set up an automatic withdrawal with the insurance provider to have the money deducted from your account each month.

Notify the State of Any Changes

In the same way that the insurance company is required to report any changes in your coverage to the state, you are also required to do so. When you have this endorsement on your policy, however,  you can still change your policy if you find a provider who can offer you a more competitive rate.

However, if you choose to do so, it's best to contact the state before and after you make this change. Should you decide to change your policy, contact the appropriate agency to let them know that you are ending your coverage and starting a new policy. You can then contact them again once the new policy has been established.

Drive Safely

While a number of drivers are required to carry a SR-22 endorsement due to a DUI or DWI, you can also be required to carry this component if you have been involved in a high number of accidents. Whatever the reasoning for this requirement, it is important that you make an effort to drive safely.

If you are caught making a high number of violations, such as excessive speeding, or you are involved in an accident, this could put your insurance coverage in jeopardy or at the very least make your coverage costs increase. Remember, any change to your policy puts your SR-22 component in jeopardy, which also means your legal right to drive could be on the line.

Maintaining your SR-22 endorsement is critical to your ability to drive. Make sure you are maintaining your coverage as necessary. Contact companies such as Able Insurance Agency to see what rates they can give you.
